Mocama (mo-comma) is the name chosen by the Spanish to identify the unique Timucua dialect spoken in a narrow band of coastal territory that stretches from the mouth of the Altamaha River near St. Simons Island, GA south to St. Augustine, Florida. The historical translation of the word Mocama is the ocean, or more succinctly stated by a translator, big water where the sun is born.
